UTOverview
Ultrasonic flaw detection transmits high-frequency sound into the material. Echoes from internal reflectors show where a defect is, how deep it lies and how large it is.
UT is fast, needs no radiation and works on thick sections, which makes it a strong complement to radiography for welds, forgings and plate.
What it finds
- Lack of fusion and planar cracks
- Laminations in plate
- Inclusions and voids in forgings
- Root defects in butt welds
Where we use it
- Butt and nozzle welds
- Forgings, shafts and heavy castings
- Plate lamination scanning
- In-service crack monitoring
